BLOG: Skills, Stories, and Support: What Happens Inside a Men’s Shed?

Men’s Sheds are more than just spaces to work with tools and wood—they are thriving hubs of community, connection, and personal growth. Across Canada, men are coming together in these unique spaces, not only to share their skills but also to build lasting friendships and find the support they need to navigate life’s challenges. But what exactly happens inside a Men’s Shed? Let’s take a closer look at the skills, stories, and support that define Men’s Sheds and make them a lifeline for so many men.

Skills: Learning, Sharing, and Creating

At the heart of every Men’s Shed is the opportunity to learn, teach, and create. Whether it’s woodworking, metalworking, gardening, or any number of other hands-on activities, these spaces offer a chance for men to explore their interests and hone their skills in a relaxed, supportive environment.

Men often come to a Shed with varying levels of expertise. Some may have decades of experience in a trade, while others are just starting out on a new hobby. The beauty is that it doesn’t matter where you start; there’s always something to learn, and there’s always someone ready to lend a hand. Doug from the Hackberry Men’s Sheds puts it this way: “One of the joys of getting a new member is that they come in with different skills so we can learn things that we’ve never learned in our lives.”

One of the greatest aspects is the way men share their skills with one another. A retired carpenter might teach a younger member how to build a piece of furniture, while someone with a passion for gardening might show others how to grow their own vegetables. Whether the project is big or small, there’s always a sense of accomplishment that comes from creating something with your own two hands—and even more when you’re doing it alongside friends. “A shed can be anything the guys want it to be. We have bike sheds, we have an IT shed, the book clubs, art. We also have other things like the photography club.” says Jim of the Port Moody Men’s Shed.

Stories: Connecting Through Shared Experiences

While the tools and projects are important, perhaps even more valuable are the stories shared among members. For many men, especially older men, loneliness can become a real issue as life changes and social connections fade. A Men’s Shed isn’t just about building physical projects—it’s about building relationships.

As men come together to work on a project, they share stories of their past, their families, their successes, and their struggles. These conversations often provide a sense of comfort and connection, as members realize they’re not alone in their experiences. Sharing stories allows men to reflect on their lives and offer support to others who may be going through similar challenges.

In these spaces, the pressure to perform or “be strong” fades away. Instead, there’s room for vulnerability, humor, and camaraderie. Whether it’s talking about career transitions, health struggles, or simply reminiscing about the past, the stories shared inside the Men’s Shed often become a cornerstone of the community. It’s these personal connections that help form deep friendships and support networks that extend beyond the Shed.

Support: A Safe Space for Mental Health and Well-Being

Another powerful aspect of Men’s Sheds is the support they provide for mental health. In our society, men are often less likely to talk about their emotions or seek help when they’re feeling down. “Men have been raised from children not to cry, you want to be strong all the time. Well, that just reinforces as you get older. Men don’t ask for help. You can even feel suicidal and you may not tell anybody because men don’t do that, and we’re trying to change that,” says Chris from Port Moody. “I think governments and other nonprofits are starting to recognize Men’s Sheds as an important ingredient in the health of men.”

Many members find that the sense of belonging and shared experience within a Men’s Shed has a profound impact on their mental well-being. Whether it’s spending time with others while working on a project or simply having someone to talk to over a cup of coffee, the Shed becomes a safe space where men can express themselves, unload stress, and receive encouragement.

The benefits of this type of emotional support are significant. Studies have shown that engaging in social activities, particularly those involving shared tasks and meaningful connections, can improve mood, reduce feelings of isolation, and even combat symptoms of depression. Men’s Sheds provide just the kind of environment where these positive mental health outcomes can flourish.

Inside a Men’s Shed, there’s much more than sawdust and tools—it’s a space where men can learn new skills, share their stories, and find the support they need to thrive. These sheds aren’t just workshops; they’re communities, helping men build connections, boost their mental well-being, and rediscover a sense of purpose.
