Health by Stealth: How Men’s Sheds Strengthen Men’s Health and Well-Being

At the recent Canadian Association on Gerontology (CAG) conference, Men’s Sheds Canada hosted a powerful panel discussion on the theme of “Health by Stealth.”

The concept speaks to something that happens naturally in Men’s Sheds across the country — men supporting each other’s mental health and overall well-being through connection, purpose, and friendship. It’s not a program or a therapy session; it’s men coming together to build, talk, and look out for one another.

Moderated by MSC President Robert Goluch, the panel featured five members from Sheds across Canada, who shared stories of how their fellow Shedders have been supported, encouraged, and even transformed through the simple act of showing up and connecting. Their experiences reveal that small, everyday interactions — a conversation, a shared laugh, a project worked on together — can be as powerful as any formal intervention when it comes to men’s health.

As Goluch noted during the session, this kind of connection has a healing quality all its own — what he calls “shedicine.”

This session is a must-watch for anyone interested in men’s health, community well-being, or the simple power of connection.
