Many Shedders like a challenge, particularly one that connects with younger people. Recently, the Strathcona Country Men’s Shed in Sherwood Park, Alberta, built a new racetrack for the local 169th Glen Allan Scout Troop after it was discovered the old one was damaged. For the Shed, it was a great opportunity to volunteer their skills to help local youth.
Guided by Garry Barnes, himself a former 169th Troop leader, Shedders studied the old track and developed a proposal for a replacement. They built and tested it, and had a lot of fun in the process. It’s expected the 169th Troop will soon test out their knowledge of aerodynamics, gravity, and force with their Beaver Buggies, Kub Kars, and Scout Trucks on the track at the Strathcona Vehicle Rally in March.
Giving back in their communities is at the heart of Men’s Sheds – supporting others, sharing skills, and building connections across generations.
Many thanks to Peter Kuzma, the storyteller for Men’s Shed Strathcona County, who contributed this story.
