Canada’s National Conversation on the Health of Men and Boys Begins Today

Last week, the Federal Government announced plans for a national strategy to support men’s and boy’s health to be released later this year – and starting today, they’re inviting feedback from the public in a national conversation.

According to the government, “the goal is to create supportive and safe environments, challenge harmful stereotypes, reduce stigma and encourage men of all ages to seek help when they need it.”

Men’s Sheds Canada is looking forward to engaging with policy makers to help build an effective national health strategy for men. As health concerns related to social isolation and depression are often unrecognized, and men can be reluctant to seek help, Men’s Sheds have a vital role to play in fostering emotional well-being and transformative, fulfilling relationships for men in their senior years across the country.

Developing a national men’s health strategy that includes older men is essential for health equity, given their higher risk of preventable illness, mental health challenges, and social isolation. Older men face higher rates of preventable illness, suicide, and social isolation, yet they are less likely to engage in preventive healthcare or seek support, due to stigma and systemic gaps in services. With one in four Canadians projected to be over 65 by 2030, the health and well-being of older men is both a pressing equity issue and a public health priority. Also, older men are a huge, under-utilized reservoir of social capital that could be making greater contributions to their communities. Investing in a national strategy will improve quality of life, reduce healthcare costs, and strengthen communities by keeping older men active, connected, engaged, and productive.

Health Canada has also launched an online questionnaire on men’s and boys’ health.

We also invite you to share your responses with us so we can compile ideas and suggestions, and promote the voices of older men.
